The Ankara-based artist duo SOJÖRN consists of Ekin Ünal and Müge İrem Beyazıt. Their collaborative art practice started in 2019, after meeting during their architecture studies. Their practice is informed by their common interest in spaces, interrelations and materialities. In production, the duo sees the processes and materials they use as active agents alongside the artist and deems their partnership not only a fixed duality but also a fluid plurality. Based on the intellectual and processual explorations made at times as singular, and at times as joint identities within this plurality; in their practice, they focus predominantly on perception, identities, nature and processes with the material language they developed using plastic and textile waste. They follow the apparent and/or invisible connections, traces, disparities and coalescences within the existence and the individual in their works.
Alongside their practice as an artistic duo, SOJÖRN also operates as an art/artists alliance project with Beyazıt and Ünal’s own identities as artists, curators and architects at its core, expanding and contracting through other creatives. The duo is interested in exploring the potentials of SOJÖRN as a core module of collective production and collaboration that other creatives can attach themselves to. Under this identity, SOJÖRN creates and/or curates “occurrences” as they define them. These “occurrences” are temporary installations, environments and/or performances that aim to alter and shift the space that they inhabit.
